 Sub-Series

Sub-Series II: Miscellaneous Speech Files,, 1965 and 1970-1981.

Dates

  • 1965 and 1970-1981.

Scope and Contents

Miscellaneous Speech Files is comprised of six small sets of subject-oriented speech files which were brought together by the archivist to form this sub-series. The materials appear to be reference copies of speeches maintained by individual staff members from either HAW's office or, mostly, his committee staffs. The sub-series includes some speeches given by HAW staff members, including committee counsels Don Elisburg and Gerald Feder. The bulk of the sub-series likely duplicates material found in Speech Files, but this sub-series is useful for the thematic tendency of the sets. Several folders (particularly in set B) appear to include background materials used by the speechwriter. The sets of speeches in this sub-series include:

A: labor issues from the mid-1970s, including occupational safety & health, OSHA administration and enforcement, situs picketing, and workers compensation;

B: labor issues from the late 1970s-1980;

C: a binder of speeches from the mid-1970s related to alcoholism and drug programs;

D: social service issues from the mid-late 1970s, including health care, drug addiction, child development, aging, and other;

E: housing issues, for the most part, from 1979-1981. These appear to be speeches written by Banking, Housing and Urban Development committee staff David Yudin and Al Eisenberg;

F: miscellaneous matters, including working files for HAW's speech concerning the Great Society, given at Oberlin College in 1965.

Arrangement

Miscellaneous Speech Files is arranged in six sets of folders, each set advancing in rough chronological order. Each of the first five sets consist of folders found together by the archivist and was given an alpha designation by the archivist. Original folders and labels were retained to the extent possible as a means of further linking the contents of each set together. The sixth set is comprised of content from various standalone documents, folders, and binders. Within each set, order is chronological.
