 Sub-Series

Sub-Series II: Aging and Metropolitan Affairs Material,, 1960-1965.

Dates

  • 1960-1965.

Scope and Contents

Aging and Metropolitan Affairs Material includes a variety of material largely used as distribution material for HAW's constituents. The predominant themes of these materials are mass transportation and open space legislation. There is also some information pertaining to housing and aging legislation. Materials include press releases, fact sheets, floor remarks, hearings, and various versions of bills, especially for 1963 and what would become the Mass Transportation Act of 1964. A significant amount of material is from 1963, likely because of HAW's intense involvement in 1963-64 with the mass transportation bill. Together, the sub-series represents a convenient summary of materials related to key HAW legislative initiatives in the early 1960s.

Arrangement

Aging and Metropolitan Affairs Material are arranged with the small set of files on Aging followed by those on Metropolitan Affairs (the Aging and Metropolitan Affairs sets were found apart by the archivist in the original collection). Within each set, arrangement is chronological.

The original folders were retained. For Metropolitan Affairs, the folder labels appear to be color-coded and, within each year, arrangement is by these color codes. Generally, yellow-labeled folders include conferences of mayors, fact sheets, program guides, articles and speeches. Blue-labeled folders include Senate reports, floor debates, Congressional Record reprints, revised editions of bills, and section-by section-summaries. Pink-labeled folders contain press releases. Red and white-colored folders contain copies of bills printed for distribution.

Related Series

The individual documents found in Aging and Metropolitan Affairs Material are most likely, but not necessarily, found in other parts of the collection, though perhaps not in the same thematically coherent fashion as found here. These other series include, among others, PRESS RELEASES & NEWSLETTERS, LEGISLATION FILES, SPEECHES, and CONGRESSIONAL RECORD SPEECH & BILL FILES.

Appraisal and Discard Information

As files of material for distribution, each folder typically contained many copies of each item. Only two copies (if available) of each item were retained by the archivist. All original folders were retained.
