Sub-Series I: Bills,, 1954-1956.
Dates
- 1954-1956.
Scope and Contents
Bills includes documents related to introduced legislation, including bills, press releases, correspondence, remarks/statements, and reference material. The bulk of the material dates from the 84th Congress (1955-1956). Significant themes include anti-communism (i.e., HAW bill outlawing the Communist Party, HAW proposal for expansion of NATO scope), concern for the environment (i.e., HAW bill for research into air pollution), and support for small business (e.g., strengthening of Robinson-Patman anti-trust legislation; private bill for United Foundation Corp of Union, NJ). The Trade Adjustment Act folders include extensive correspondence from labor and business leaders (notably Bernard Baruch, David Rockefeller, and Walter Reuther), among others regarding a proposed HAW trade bill.

Arrangement
Bills is arranged in bill number order; bills (HR) are followed by concurrent resolutions (HR Con Res), then joint resolutions (HR J Res).
The original folder labels included the bill number and the bill's opening phrase/purpose statement. For the processed folder descriptions, the archivist retained the bill number, but used only keywords rather than the extended quotations found on the original folders.
The few files dating from the 83rd Congress are noted as such in the folder description. Bills introduced by HAW are indicated with the acronym "HAW" in the folder description. Folders that contain only a print of the bill itself are indicated with a lower case "b" at the end of the folder description.
The date ranges used in the container list were based on the Congressional term of the subject bill and were not taken from the documents themselves.
