Sub-Series IV: General Files,, 1952-1956.
Dates
- 1952-1956.
Scope and Contents
General Files relate to New Jersey matters and to HAW activities. The files on New Jersey matters are similar to those found in SPECIAL PROJECTS from HAW's Senate years in that they contain correspondence, reports, background material, etc. on specific issues. Especially useful material along these lines concern the proposed placement of a Nike missile site in Summit, early (1954) expressions of interest by HAW in Sandy Hook as a recreational area, and housing and commuter railroad issues in Elizabeth.
Materials relating specifically to HAW's activities include a small photo album and clippings concerning his 1955 Central America trip (also see Legislative Files); HAW articles, statements, correspondence and speeches on housing, foreign policy, trade adjustment, etc.; and financial statements, endorsements, and other campaign-related documents. Notable items include HAW's "Freedom's Challenge" article written for Oberlin College's alumni magazine in which HAW articulated his worldview of democracy and anti-communism, and HAW's proposal of a bipartisan Foreign Policy Advisory Council to President Dwight Eisenhower.
