HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OFFICE FILES Series Overview,, 1950-1957.

Dates

  • 1950-1957.

Scope and Contents

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OFFICE FILES includes material related to HAW's three years in the House of Representatives from New Jersey's 6th Congressional District (Union County). HAW's committee assignments in the House centered on foreign affairs, especially with respect to oversight of State Department administration of overseas operations. Hence, foreign affairs figure substantially in the series. Nevertheless, the series also includes substantial material on several domestic issues, particularly as they concern New Jersey.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OFFICE FILES is the core series in the collection covering HAW's tenure in the House. The series includes material ranging from legislation to constituent correspondence to press releases. Limited material from the House years is found in other series. The series CAMPAIGN FILES includes a small amount of material from HAW's 1953, 1954, and failed 1956 campaigns. A folder ("Senator: From House Side") in the series LEGISLATIVE REFERENCE FILES includes HAW's voting record for 1954-1956.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OFFICE FILES is organized in six sub-series. The first five sub-series reflect the original order and filing structure of the House records as found by the archivist in boxes sent to the Federal Records Center by HAW's Senate staff in 1965 and 1966. The Publicity sub-series was constructed by the archivist generally from materials found in Fed Records Center boxes and from boxes taken from HAW's office in 1982. The sub-series are:

  1. Bills, 1954-1956. (0.75 cubic feet)
  2. Legislative Files, 1953-1956. (2.5 cubic feet)
