 Sub-Series

Sub-Series III: Subject Correspondence,, 1972-1977.

Dates

  • 1972-1977.

Scope and Contents

In 1972, HAW's office ended the use of the CENTRAL CORRESPONDENCE filing structure, returning to a version of the legislative, departmental, and general correspondence structure used in the early 1960s. Subject Correspondence was the term then applied to those categories of correspondence formerly known as "general." (An exception was the personal correspondence category, which remained separately filed; see the Personal Correspondence sub-series of this series.) As with the earlier sub-series, Subject Correspondence includes correspondence on New Jersey state matters, political affairs, HAW's publicity and public relations efforts, as well as condolences, thank you's, requests, and other such material. Reactions to President Ford's pardon of former President Nixon and comments on the 1976 Presidential campaign are among the substantive topics included in the sub-series.

Appraisal and Discard Information

Approximately 10 cubic feet of subject correspondence was discarded by the archivists. Generally, routine requests, office administration, routine congratulatory and other courtesy correspondence and so forth were discarded. Prior to discarding, all material was reviewed at the item level. Any individual items with useful or substantive content were retained, especially those that related to NJ or political affairs. Generally, items labeled Honorary Sponsors, Endorsements, and Resolutions were kept. Letters to editors, requests from senators, condolences and congratulations from senators were also kept.
