Scope and Contents

Various Committee & Labor Subcommittee Matters includes a wide range of material that a) involved topics that did not readily fit into one of the previous sub-series, b) cut across several topics (e.g., budget analyses, Executive Committee minutes), or c) came from folders of committee counsel or professional staff members that contained multiple subjects. Researchers interested in topics found within the specific sub-series are advised to review the contents of this Various sub-series as well.

The sub-series includes a number of important materials including: Professional Staff Member Martin Jensen's files on HAW's evolving statements and correspondence responses on abortion; HAW's letters of late 1980 abstaining from his chairmanships in the face of Abscam developments; staff memos and correspondence on various labor and health topics; HAW legislative biographical material, including bills sponsored in various Congresses; a set of 1976 legislative position/background papers drafted by the Committee staff for HAW; HAW's home fuel assistance bill (1979); various HAW speeches; agendas and background of the Senate Rules Committee (1979-80); and staff memos and other materials related to the 1971 Pension Study, a step along the road to ERISA.

The sub-series is arranged alphabetically by subject. Material found at a later date was placed at the end of the end of the container list. Material without a reference number includes complete files of original records which Rutgers was permitted to retain because they were duplicate carbon copies.
