Sub-Series I: Transcripts,, 1959 and 1963.
Dates
- 1959 and 1963.
Scope and Contents
Transcripts includes transcripts of HAW's 1959 radio programs and of HAW's 1963 TV and radio programs. The subject matter is varied but frequently concerns atomic fallout and the hazards of atomic radiation, arms control, labor legislation and the Labor Subcommittee's activities, migratory labor, housing, mass transportation, civil rights, and the future of NATO and other foreign affairs. Although the 1959 transcripts focus on HAW's positions, the 1963 material follows an interview format. In this format, HAW was often the interviewee, questioned by several newspapers and reporters from outlets such as Newsweek, Metro Media, New York Post, and CBS. Jim Randolph, a reporter from Metro Media, conducted many of the interviews. However, HAW also acted frequently as the interviewer and among his significant interviewees were Senators Eugene McCarthy, William Fulbright, and Tom Clark, Secretary of Labor Willard Wirtz, Edward R. Murrow of the US Information Agency, and Archibald Alexander on arms control. The interviews generally range in time from 5 to 30 minutes.
Most, though not all, of the 1963 transcript files include the related recording on an Edison Voicewriter disc.

Restrictions
Rutgers has no mechanism for playing the Edison Voicewriter discs and access copies on an alternative medium were not available as of the date of this Inventory. Therefore, the content of these discs cannot be accessed by researchers because of these technical limitations. However, as digitization of additional material occurs over time, the finding aid may not be current in this regard, so the researcher should contact Rutgers Special Collections and University Archives for current status or to discuss access alternatives.
Arrangement
Transcripts is arranged with the radio transcripts of 1959 followed by the transcripts of 1963. Within each year, arrangement is chronological. The 1963 transcripts were retained in their original folders.
Appraisal and Discard Information
Generally, the files for 1959 included only multiple copies of the transcripts. Two copies (if available) of each of the 1959 transcripts were retained, with all other copies and original folders discarded. For 1963, the files tended to include only unique material with few copies. Therefore, for 1963, all material was retained by the archivist in its original folders. Edison Voicewriter discs found in the files were retained as found.
All transcript files found by the archivist were retained. It is known that HAW did TV and radio interviews and broadcasts in other years, however, only files for 1959 and 1963 were found by the archivist.
