Sub-Series V: Grants and Contracts,, 1967-1982.
Dates
- 1967-1982.
Scope and Contents
Grants and Contracts consists principally of documents concerning grants and contracts awarded by government departments/agencies to New Jersey municipalities, companies, universities, etc. The documents are primarily photocopies of government announcements and original summaries prepared by HAW's staff of the awarded grants and contracts. The department/agencies represented in these files include the Corps of Engineers, Housing and Urban Development, National Endowment for the Arts, Interior, Environmental Protection Agency, Community Services Administration, Health, Education and Welfare (HEW), Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, National Institute of Health, National Science Foundation, and many more.
Although there is little unique material in the sub-series, it is useful for its county orientation and its inclusion of all grants and contracts activity across department/agency. In addition to this county-wide (or, in many instances, state-wide) view, these centralized files can be useful for identifying specific projects which may have additional, unique material in the other sub-series of SPECIAL PROJECTS. For some years, Grants and Contracts includes the pink carbon copy of outgoing project or departmental correspondence; the file coding on these items can lead a researcher into specific folders of other series or sub-series where the original incoming correspondence and perhaps other related material can be found.
The sub-series also includes copies of HAW's daily schedule for the years 1979-1981.

Arrangement
Grants and Contracts retains the original order of the files, which proceed chronologically from 1971-1982 in sets covering periods of one or two years. Within each set, arrangement is alphabetical by county, with multi-county or statewide files at the end of each set. A staff summary of 1967-1969 grants and contracts opens the series. Boxes of index cards recording each grant and contract for the 1970-1975 period were placed at the end of the sub-series.
For the most part, the original folders were retained. The date range used in the container list is based on the general range of the folder content and does not necessarily reflect the dates of all documents in the folder.
Appraisal and Discard Information
The bulk of the original files was retained. For some years, the original files included carbon copies of outgoing correspondence related to individual case files; these were discarded. Other carbon copies with non-substantive content were also discarded.
