NEW JERSEY INFORMATION FILES,, 1955-1970.

Dates

  • 1955-1970.

Scope and Contents

NEW JERSEY INFORMATION FILES is comprised primarily of background reference material on New Jersey-related subjects. Much of the material in this series complements subjects found in other parts of the collection, especially mass transportation, jetport, Sandy Hook, Tocks Island, and pollution. Some of the municipality and county files include materials of the type found in the project files, such as those concerning housing, education, anti-poverty programs, and a program to train unemployed for Wall Street jobs. Particularly rich material is found in this series on the Job Corps's proposed Skills Training Center at Camp Kilmer, public relations material on the 1968 New Jersey bond issue, and the jetport proposals.

Other New Jersey-related materials in the series include photos of Sunfish Pond in the Delaware Water Gap area, a note for file from HAW's press office regarding a briefing and early reactions to the 1967 Newark riot/uprising, and a "County Background Booklet" prepared by the NJ Democratic State Committee for HAW and Governor Hughes. The series includes several photos and related material concerning an oil spill at San Juan, PR, that was cleaned-up using a talc manufactured by a Trenton firm, United Sierra Division of Cyprus Mines Corp.

The series includes some campaign and political documents, including speeches of Governor Robert Meyner from 1959 and 1960, drafts of HAW remarks supporting Meyner for the presidency in 1960, strategy proposals for using youth in HAW's 1964 re-election campaign and the results of a survey of the NJ electorate, draft New Jersey Democratic Party platforms, and an analysis of HAW votes relative to other senators for 1967 and 1968 as done by a professor at the University of South Dakota.

Appraisal and Discard Information

NEW JERSEY INFORMATION FILES originally amounted to 19 cubic feet of material. The bulk (13 cubic feet) consisted of newspaper clippings glued to paper backing; these were discarded. Another 1.5 cubic feet of pamphlets, booklets, annual reports, etc. were given to the Special Collections and University Archives bibliographer for disposition.
