Scope and Contents

Health & Education/Human Resource Development includes material regarding a broad range of health and education legislation and oversight activities of the Committee on Labor & Human Resources. Staff notes and briefing memos comprise a substantial part of this sub-series, mostly those of professional staff members. The series also includes many HAW speeches and remarks on health issues, and the duplicate carbon copies of correspondence of several professional staff members.

Legislative and implementation activities for HAW's bill S.6 (P.L. 94-142) - the Education for All Handicapped Children Act - is well-represented in the sub-series. Legislation and regulation affecting drugs and the pharmaceutical industry is in this series. Other health matters, including mental health, chiropractry, and the ethics of human experiments are included.

Items of local New Jersey interest can be found in the sub-series including: a study of local demographics by Brick Township Hospital, a report on a Plainfield Neighborhood Health Services demonstration project for EPSDT (early and periodic screening, diagnosis, and treatment of children), and a proposal for an Ironbound (Newark) Health Center. Material on hearings held in Jersey City, Newark, and Princeton for home energy, national health insurance, and home health care, respectively, is in the sub-series.

These are followed by materials related to legislation, in bill number order. Next are the white carbons of the professional staff members' correspondence. These are followed by folders of HAW speeches and remarks. Finally, various subjects are presented in alphabetical order.
