SUBJECT CORRESPONDENCE,, 1959.

Dates

  • 1959.

Scope and Contents

SUBJECT CORRESPONDENCE reflects a short-lived filing system used by HAW's office in 1959 for correspondence. The series is comprised of several subjects, ranging across the types that would become known as departmental, legislative, and general correspondence by late 1959. Given the short life span of the filing system, the series is of limited size and scope, and is useful mostly for filling in the chronological front-end of topics found in the later correspondence series. Most notably along these lines are materials documenting HAW's early work toward a Woodrow Wilson Memorial. The series also includes significant material on proposals for use of Ellis Island, an analysis of the 1953 election in HAW's 6th Congressional district, and the concerns of Middlesex and Somerset Counties relative to their standing in new Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSA). Also, the series includes original correspondence from President Eisenhower to HAW regarding oil import restrictions.

Arrangement

Arrangement is alphabetical by subject. This is a slight modification of the original order which, although alphabetical, was tied to a numbering scheme. This scheme could not be entirely reconstructed or even perceived because the short-lived nature of the files resulted in large gaps in the structure. Any numbering on the original folder labels was recorded on the processed folders. However, these file numbers were not included in the container list.

Container 411 includes those files with legal size documents that were separated from the rest of the sub-series.

Related Series

SUBJECT CORRESPONDENCE was replaced at some point in 1959 or 1960 with three separate correspondence filing structures: DEPARTMENTAL CORRESPONDENCE, the General Correspondence sub-series of GENERAL, ADMINISTRATIVE, & PUBLIC RELATIONS CORRESPONDENCE, and the Legislative Correspondence by Subject sub-series of LEGISLATIVE/ISSUE CORRESPONDENCE. Some 1959 subject correspondence was carried forward into these new files.

Appraisal and Discard Information

Approximately 1 cubic foot of the original correspondence was discarded, including routine requests, meeting invitations, employment requests, and case files.

General

Index Terms

An effort was made to identify and index key themes. These terms were applied within the time constraints of processing and to folders that contain many specific topics. By no means do the index terms reflect the entire contents of a folder.
