Lubell 2/3: 16

Extremely sparse ink drawing of a mountain range landscape in California, with the mountains, horizon, and trees are drawn with light red ink. A small amount of red wash is also used to color in a valley and some parts of the mountains, but for the most part, details are fairly rare for the piece. One use of detail is a line pattern used for show what appears to be a farm or pasture. Drawn on a page torn from an artist’s sketchbook.

Scope and Contents: Lubell 2/3: 17 Pastel and wash drawing with brown ink of a large forest of dead or leafless trees dwarfed by a hill, itself dotted with more verdant trees. Some buildings can be seen at a distance on the left side. Art style is very much impressionistic, with a lack of specific definition, wide use of colors, and the way that they form a pattern. However, there are still a number of small details, like the little-defined plants growing next to the trees. Painted on a blue page...

Scope and Contents: Lubell 2/3: 18 Ink and wash drawing of what appears to be a very stylized depiction of two grapevines surrounded by grasses and flowers. Black ink is drawn very thick on the grapevine trunks, while much more lightly on the vines. The only apparent colors used are blue (for the trunks) and yellow (for flowers). While the space is implicit, there is no other contextual space or environment for this vineyard. Drawn on a page torn from an artist’s sketchbook. 45.2 x 30...

Scope and Contents: Lubell 2/3: 19 Brown ink and wash drawing (with pastel). A Spartan depiction of a row of dead trees, flanked by a magnificent mountain range. The latter is drawn only in very light wash, giving it (and, by extension, the horizon) a hazy impression. A small house, shown in light red, can be seen on the left side in the background, while the trees are deliberately poorly defined. Small plants, possibly weeds or grapevines, are sprouting between the latter. A large tear on the...

Scope and Contents: Lubell 2/3: 20 Brown ink and pastel drawing (with gouache) of a clearing on the edge of a complex section of flora and forestry in the shadow of a giant, red mountain. An artificial or man-made structure – possibly a kind of stone fence – dots one side, while the chaotic forest is on the other. Extensive and varied line patterns can be seen throughout the piece, both small (the leaves on the trees near the center, the small branches on one of the larger dead trees) and large...

Scope and Contents: Lubell 2/3: 21 Brown ink and wash drawing with pastel. Rich, colorful, depiction of a great section of hills and valleys, with a group of dead trees in the foreground. While some ink has been used to outline the space and environment, as well as define certain areas more with quickly-drawn line patterns, this space is entirely for the extensive and diverse range of colors. A host of blues (sky), greens (pasture, grass), brown (trees, hills), and oranges (part of the land) mesh...
