Scope and Contents: Lubell 2/1: 1 Ink drawing (with gray wash, gouache and pastels) of a hill, matted with five houses over the horizon of a dark forest. While many individual details are added meticulously – one house has a particular roofing pattern, and the grass in the foreground is detailed – the lack of specific definition on many of the pieces gives it a moving, lived-in sense. Different colors are used to enhance the image: yellowish-brown dirt roads, a green row of trees, and dark grey for...

Scope and Contents: Lubell 2/1: 4 Ink drawing of a thistle branch, surrounded by two fern branches; the two plant types are additionally separated by form. Red ink is used for the thistle, with soft lines that seem to recede into the background (the plant’s details consist largely of the bud and leaves). The ferns, meanwhile, use black ink to make sharper and more detailed leaves. Individual short line and dot patterns mark all of the leaves, and ticks and pieces can be found throughout the branch....

Lubell 2/1: 7

Ink drawing of a hyacinth, with multiple stems and flowers spilling from an unseen bulb. No color is used to differentiate flowers or punctuate the image, but a myriad of crossed line patterns are found all over the plant. Interestingly, each of the flowers is distinctly positioned, with many of the right side plants starting to wilt. On verso can be found an apparently unfinished drawing of the same subject.

Scope and Contents: Lubell 2/1: 9 An extremely abstract, almost totally non-figural drawing in pastel and wash of what appear to be very stylized dead trees in a field, with a blue tree and a nondescript white cloud in the background. Details are both sparse and fairly confusing; the piece looks more like an extremely stylistic interpretation of a more concrete place. Color is limited to greens, brown, blue, and white. Possibly set in California. This is (possibly) corroborated by the trees – they...

Scope and Contents: Lubell 2/1: 10 Black ink and wash drawing of a portion of land, with a section of road far to the distance. The material goes somewhat apart from other Lubell pieces by using different depth and width of its lines to simulate depth instead of line patterns and crosshatching. A tree in the right side of the piece, likely the most noticeable thing on the picture, uses a combination of thick and short lines (for the trunk and branches, respectively), along with splotch patterns for...

Lubell 2/2: 11

Pastel drawing with black ink. A depiction of some trees together in autumn. The pastel coloring causes the various reds, yellows, and greens to blend together in a way somewhat reminiscent of impressionist art (without singular structures that appear distinct from the background). A house can be seen in the background, also in pastel but with a much more structured design. Drawn on light tan paper.

Lubell 2/2: 12

Ink and wash drawing of a person waving a group of branches or fronds around three blue birds. Instead of larger waves, thick lines of blue and dark red are placed under the final thick black ink lines. The lack of a heavy outline gives the figures a sense of aggression and movement. A group of lines for tall grass lines the bottom right part of the paper.

Lubell 2/2: 13

Stylized ink drawing the top of a tree trunk as it splits into different branches. Line patterns used for the needles, with most of the shading done by thicker lines instead of the patterns Lubell generally uses. Collectively, the branches have a generic curve that goes counterclockwise. No background, horizon, or context. Signed Winifred Lubell. Slight tear near top right edge.

Lubell 2/2: 14

Ink drawing of foliage of an unknown plant (blueberry?), with berries and leaves sprouting from its branches. Only black ink is used, and the detail moves from significant to increasingly sparse and empty from right to left as the line patterns stop and the outlines look less concrete. Signed W Lubell. Note, partially cut off on right side of paper reads “Bluebe.” Drawn on a page torn from an artist’s sketchbook.

Lubell 2/2: 15

Ink and wash drawing of a grouping of weeds and other plant life. Various pen inks – red, black, blue, and yellow – are used for individual species. Similarly, different artistic styles like crosshatching and dot patterns are used not only on different plants, but in different ways.
