Scope and Contents

Lubell 2/1: 1

Ink drawing (with gray wash, gouache and pastels) of a hill, matted with five houses over the horizon of a dark forest. While many individual details are added meticulously – one house has a particular roofing pattern, and the grass in the foreground is detailed – the lack of specific definition on many of the pieces gives it a moving, lived-in sense. Different colors are used to enhance the image: yellowish-brown dirt roads, a green row of trees, and dark grey for the background trees. Pen ink is frequently used to add shading and different patterns (one of the houses uses it to appear distinct), and in one case is used for the outline of a cow. Signed Winifred Lubell, June 30 ’57. Drawn on light tan paper.
