This lot consists mostly of letters written by Miriam T. Williams (1798–1876, later wife to Benjamin W. Corlies) to her parents, Tylee Williams (1768–1828) and Elizabeth Hartshorne (1771–1849) of Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, while attending school and living away from home.

Scope and Contents: Enoch L. Cowart was born in Freehold, a son of Enoch Cowart (1768–1851) and Eleanor Lloyd (1768–1830). He became one of that community’s leading citizens and businessmen. Cowart was known as a composer of political songs and patriotic essays. Scope and Contents:

Cowart & Perrine was a Freehold store and a partnership of Enoch L. Cowart (1807–1889) and David Clark Perrine (1816–1888). The business opened in December of 1840. It was dissolved by mutual consent on 1 April 1853, with Perrine continuing at the same location. A collection of Cowart & Perrine business papers is owned by the Monmouth County Historical Association.

Scope and Contents: Samuel Craig Cowart was a son of Enoch L. Cowart (1807–1889) and his wife Ann Marie Bowne (1817–1898). He was married in 1891 to Florence Salome Shepherd (1869–1957). Cowart became a leading Freehold attorney, and, like his father, was deeply involved in local patriotic and historical activities.
