Also includes a travel diary for his sister Clemence S. Coward (1818–1880), 1851–1857, that was also used to collect funds for improvements to the Freehold Baptist Church, 1863–1866.
Scope and Contents
Enoch L. Cowart was born in Freehold, a son of Enoch Cowart (1768–1851) and Eleanor Lloyd (1768–1830). He became one of that community’s leading citizens and businessmen. Cowart was known as a composer of political songs and patriotic essays. Cowart papers, consisting chiefly of Civil War letters, is held by Rutgers Special Collections & University Archives. In addition, a collection of Cowart Family papers is owned by the Monmouth County Historical Association.
