Scope and Contents
Samuel Craig Cowart was a son of Enoch L. Cowart (1807–1889) and his wife Ann Marie Bowne (1817–1898). He was married in 1891 to Florence Salome Shepherd (1869–1957). Cowart became a leading Freehold attorney, and, like his father, was deeply involved in local patriotic and historical activities. He routinely gave addresses on the Battle of Monmouth, several of which were printed. For an extended biography of Cowart, see The Freehold Transcript, 30 April 1943, 1. A collection of Cowart Family Papers is owned by the Monmouth County Historical Association.
