Lubell 454

One inch cut butcher block. Title is a paper label on lower side edge of block. Two figures back to back. One, a nude female with large wings standing on a ram, holds an owl in one hand and [an olive branch?] in the other. The other a [female?] wearing [Sumerian] tiered robes, stands on a female lion/leopard and holds an urn in her hand. Colors: brown, black and residual white.

Scope and Contents: Lubell 455 Cut plywood block with narrow uncut strip. Title “Ishtar” on side edge of block. Fertility goddess, wearing hat and leading a mythological animal (possibly a griffin; it has a lion's head and bird wings). In her hands is a 7-pointed flower (with an eighth possibly obscured from our perspective); this is likely a reference to the 8-pointed star associated with her. Panels of hieroglyphics. Cut butcher block, held together with dado and biscuit. Three female figures lying recumbent on mats. Left and right border are temple columns. A burning/smoking brazier is in the foreground. Color: primarily browns. For print, see Malta/[Oracle of the Dream], Lubell 374 (Box 9, Folder 16).

Face of board, in uncut strip, reads, in pen, “Sept. 1986, Vulture over Oracles.” Title on side edge, in marker, reads “1986 Malta-Vulture.” From prints: Three women sleeping on low wooden beds, with a large, black bird spreading its wings over them. Lubell 459

Cut plywood block. Title on right side. Male and female [Egyptian?] figures kneeling and picking flowers among plants at water’s edge. Each holds plucked flowers. Colors: greens and blues with red and yellow ochre. Masking tape was removed from the front of the block, using Un-Du Framing Adhesive Remover.
