Ink drawing (with watercolor) of an Apocynum (commonly known as “dogbane”) intertwined with a grape vine. Aside from color on individual grapes and one leaf, wash color seems has been restricted to thin lines for the branches, while line patterns are primarily used to provide shading and visual distinction. Drawn on illustration board. Oversized.

Ink drawing (with watercolor) portrays a short, slightly dilapidated stone wall, overgrown with foliage. Large, thick ink lines define and structure the wall, while thinner, more erratically-placed counterparts give the plant life a chaotic edge. Wash is used on leaves (green), and parts of the ground and stone (grey, brown), but much of the piece is uncolored. Verso has pastel sketch of a flower. Oversized.

Scope and Contents: Lubell 11/2: 27 Ink and wash drawing. Landscape of a Martha’s Vineyard cemetery, with the focus on four gravestones of what appears to be the Luce family. From left to right: Charles, Josias P., Mary, and Leander. Trees and foreground plants (all of which are inked) have barely any presence; all of the greenery take up space as an intangible background. Ink is also used for outlines and writing of gravestones. Extensive grey, green, blue, and brown wash used for color....

Scope and Contents: Lubell 11/2: 28 Pastel drawing (with gouache and watercolor). Landscape of a field, with a massive tree in the center and a house in the back. The tree, extensively inked, commands the attention of the viewer while the other objects (other trees in the background, the house, reddish-brown grass) are undefined to the point where they essentially are the background. One of the trees in particular blends almost seamlessly as part of the background, while the house’s borders fail to...

Ink and wash drawing of a group of irises, as seen via a worm’s eye view. Watercolor wash is fairly sparse, compared to other Lubell pieces – only grays are used, and fairly sparingly. While ink is used in the lilies and flowers in the foreground, wash is used in specific designs in the back, giving the entire floral grouping a hazy, enigmatic energy. Ink detailing can be seen on the large petals, flowers, and seeds in the front.

Scope and Contents: Lubell 11/3: 30 Ink and wash drawing of a cemetery. Upper corners of the horizon are largely devoid of line or color, with the largest concentration near the middle and lower part of the piece. The tombstones have multiple shades and tones made from a few grays and browns. Oranges, yellows, and greens are used for the uncontrolled plant life, and browns and greens for the giant, swaying trees. Individual graves seem to have thicker outlines, particularly in and around the...
