Ink and wash drawing. Landscape of a Martha’s Vineyard cemetery, with the focus on four gravestones of what appears to be the Luce family. From left to right: Charles, Josias P., Mary, and Leander. Trees and foreground plants (all of which are inked) have barely any presence; all of the greenery take up space as an intangible background. Ink is also used for outlines and writing of gravestones. Extensive grey, green, blue, and brown wash used for color. Oversized.

Writing for each gravestone:

  1. CHARLES: Son of Leander & Mary LUCE. Died at Sierra Leone Oct 20, 1856. Aged 22 yrs & 5 mos.
  2. JOSIAS P.: Son of Leander & Mary LUCE. Lost at sea Apr. 30 1865. Aged 22 yrs, 9 mos.
  3. MARY: wife of Leander Luce. Died Oct. 11, 1870, aged 61 yrs, 2 mo, & 7 ds
  4. LEANDER: died March 20, 1874, aged 64 yrs, 6 ms, & 26 ds
