Association History
The North Jersey National Medical Association (NJNMA) was founded in 1895 by Drs. Roman and VanDyke after repeated attempts by New Jersey African-American physicians to join the American MedicalAssociation. The NJNMA also has been know as the New Jersey State Medical Association (ca. 1940s),the North Jersey Medical Association, and the North Jersey Medical Society.
The NJNMA was chartered in 1911 and continues to the present. The Association represents the entirestate with statewide membership. A South Jersey National Medical Association was also established buthas not yet been chartered.
The NJNMA business address is 280 South Harrison Street, East Orange, NJ 07018. The Associationmeets monthly, except in July and August, as does the board of trustees. Meetings often are scientifi cin nature, with a lecture by a visiting lecturer or member. Meetings are sponsored by a localpharmaceutical company.
The NJNMA has a very active auxiliary that now includes all spouses. Each year the auxiliary awardsscholarships to college-bound students interested in science in public schools in Newark, Orange, andEast Orange. (From notes taken by Barbara Smith Irwin.)
Custodial History
This collection as received as a gift from Winston Scott, MD, President of the NJNMA. The donation was received August 19, 1996.
Scope and content
The North Jersey National Medical Association Records date from 1939 to 1976, with gaps. The recordscontain miscellaneous by-laws, correspondence, clippings, minutes of meetings, membership rosters, and treasurer's reports. The records are in original and photocopy formats. The material documents thehistory and development of the NJNMA.
