Scope and Contents

This collection contains 291 open reel audio recordings. The recordings consist of mostly Chicago-area live performances (1952-1958). Performers include Duke Ellington, Johnny Hodges, Woody Herman, Arnett Cobb, Milt Buckner, Louis Jordan, Stan Kenton, Billy Taylor, Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, Johnny Pate, Donald Shirley, and Horace Henderson. There are also recordings of the Birdland All-Stars from 1955 and 1957, featuring Sarah Vaughn, Count Basie and his orchestra, Erroll Garner, and Bud Powell.
