Scope and Contents

Series comprises financial and legal documents. The bulk of the series consists of invoices and receipts reflecting the day-to-day expenditures of the Basie family; documentation of travel dates and locations; endorsed checks; other items documenting affiliation with different organizations and relationships with friends, family, and other associates; real estate records and a handful of contracts. Of particular note are Count Basie’s tour expense record notebook and Catherine Basie’s divorce proceedings and court summons for assault of Bixie Crawford in 1955 (see clipping from this year for more detail).

Arrangement

Series 9 is arranged topically based on how materials were boxed when the collection was acquired, with original order maintained when apparent. Subfolders, annotated paper strips, and materials grouped within separate enclosures indicate found order. Topics include household, utilities, banking, shipping, travel, shopping, medical and veterinary services, checks, and legal documents.
