(Diary 35. Black hardcover, red border.) Written from Japan where Professor Burks served as a special assistant to Dennis Cate, director of the Zimmerli Museum at Rutgers University. He joined a delegation at the request of then New Brunswick mayor John Lynch and comments on Japanese labor unions.

(Diary 37. Orange-red hardcover.) It is in this book that Burks learns of Jane's cancer. After enduring one year of chemotherapy and a colon operation, Jane and Ardath retreated to Mexico. By this time both Ardath and Jane knew that she was terminal.

(Diary 39. Orange-red hardcover.) Burks begins traveling again, for the first time after Jane's death but comments, "I became reconciled but far from adjusted." Choosing Nova Scotia as his destination, Burks had hoped to relive some shining memories the couple had one year prior. As usual he writes extensively of the history of Halifax and busied himself with details of the maritime lifestyle.
