Professor Ogilby is out of town, and Dr. Janeway has been indisposed. He and Jonathan (Hasbrouck, 1837) went to Dr. Elmendorf's on Saturday. The election takes place here tomorrow; it is thought that the Jackson Party will have a majority over the Whigs in the state. Dr. Milledoler has been unwell.
Went to Brooklyn Saturday morning to visit the Doctor [Van Solingen?] and Aunty; liked their new place better than the one on Courtland St. Attending fifteen lectures a week.
Had a happy vacation; four days in Trenton, visited the new state house and state prison. Uncle Robert's paper [the Trenton Journal] is published four times a week. Next spent a week in New York, the rest in Perth Amboy. Dr. Beck has returned from his winter course of lectures in Albany, now studying chemistry with him.
Cases of small pox appear to be multiplying; one of the students has 300 marks on his face. Plans to spend upcoming vacation in Trenton and New York. Dr. Strong has received an offer of $2500 from Princeton to become a professor of mathematics. Itemized expenses for the winter session follow.
Junior year; semiannual examinations. Studying moral philosophy (Dr. Cannon), rhetoric (the President), Plato's Dialogues in Greek. Successful candidates at Junior Orator elections were [Samuel] Scudder, [Benjamin] Leacock, [Henry] Dater and himself. Fine sleighing after two snowstorms.
The examination has proved entirely satisfactory to the faculty. His mother is in Perth Amboy visiting the Rev. Mr. Leacock's family.
Regretfully contemplating his upcoming Senior year, as his college life has been a happy one. Dr. Forsyth has withdrawn as commencement speaker owing to a trip to Europe, and it is too late to expect one of any reputation to replace him. Now awaiting a reply from Thomas H. Benton of Missouri. Orator for the Hall is John P. Hagemen of Princeton, Rutgers '36, who graduated with Augustus [Bruyn]. Have formed a large class in elocution, led by Mr. William Russell.
Very hot (98+) and humid; only his duty and pecuniary wants induce him to write. Mr. James S. Thayer to speak at commencement. Lists other speakers, bills for term ending July 22.
Freshman class numbers 17, Sophomore 19. Reading Juvenal with Prof. Crosby, hymns with Dr. Proudfit, Constitutional Law with the President. The President's house is described as "very desolate."
Discusses a real estate deal. Marvels at speed and frequency of train service in New Brunswick. "This attending a concert in a distant town and returning before bedtime is striking enough. But our grandchildren will see stranger things still."
