Scope and Contents
Summary: A 44-page scrapbook chronicling McCabe's service in the US Army from his induction as an Advanced ROTC cadet at Rutgers to his duties as an officer in the Checker Section at the Port of Manila. The book includes original and photocopied orders, postcards, letters, military passes and cards, publications, clippings, photographs, maps and programs for plays and concerts held in Manila. McCabe provides handwritten and typed commentary at several points in the work.
These materials cover the following topics: induction; the ASTP program at Rutgers; infantry officer training at Fort Benning, Georgia; assignment to the 113th Infantry Regiment at Camp Pickett, Virginia; duties in the Checker Section, Port of Manila, Philippines; shipping in the Port of Manila; interaction with local Filipinos; a meeting of Rutgers alumni in Manila; the state of post-war Manila; the discharge of GIs following V-J Day; the trial of General Tomoyuki Yamashita; the USO and entertainment in Manila; Good Friday rituals on Balut Island; the inauguration of Filipino President Manuel Roxas.
There are five photocopied letters between McCabe and his parents and his notes of April 17, 1995 inserted in the back of the album. The letters date from October 10, 1943, to February 12, 1946, during which time McCabe was stationed at Camp Croft, South Carolina, and in Manila. In them, he discusses: encounters with Rutgers classmates, including Richard M. Hale, RC '44, at Camp Croft and in Manila; officer's training; the local economy in Manila; the Yamashita trial; his duties in the Checker Section.
