Scope and Contents
Summary: The Course Materials subseries (Boxes 1-12) contains course syllabi, exam questions, readings, lecture notes, student papers, and classroom transparencies and exercises. There are also newspaper clippings and booklets from various organizations. Most of the material from this subseries focuses on the Comparative Labor Movement course which Eiger taught at the SMLR however, there are also materials from courses that he taught at community colleges and to union groups. As in the Articles by Eiger subseries, much of the material in this subseries focuses on Eiger's main interests, the labor movements, workers, and works councils in Germany and Sweden. Where course syllabi were not available a sampling of reading materials were kept to give a sense of the types of readings Eiger assigned to his students.
Also contained in this subseries are teaching materials and student papers from courses which Dr. Herbert Levine taught. These materials have been included here because Eiger eventually went on to teach the same course thus he used some of Dr. Levine's materials. Additionally, many of the student papers are reflective of the teaching they received at the SMLR as well as current trends and schools of thought about labor. The papers on the "Future of the Labor Movement" offers a look as to the direction that students thought the labor movement and society in general would be moving toward.
The Articles by Eiger subseries (Boxes 13-14) contains various articles written by Eiger and the supporting research materials for those articles. Most of these articles focus on co-determination (a practice in which employees have a role in the management of a company or corporation), worker's education, work, and unions in Germany and Sweden. Much of the literature on Germany focuses on the Deutscher GewerkshaftsBund (DGB) or German Confederation of Trade Unions. Additionally, this subseries also contains research for Eiger's doctoral thesis, Newark School Wars, and his article on the Newark Teachers Union.
This subseries also contains the Labor Education Notes, the SMLR published newsletter, which Eiger edited. In this newsletter, Eiger wrote about current local and national labor issues. The Labor Education Notes were kept in this series instead of the Publications series because, while they are technically a publication, they were also written by Eiger and distributed by the SMLR. Furthermore, the topics and views of these newsletters are concurrent with views expressed by Eiger in the other articles in this subseries as well as in his teachings in the classroom.
The PEL (Paid Educational Leave) subseries (Boxes 15-16) documents a program that provides employees options to further their careers and employment opportunities through the completion of educational courses. The files in this subseries focus on Rutgers' work with GM's plant, the Inland Fisher Guide, UAW Local 731 in Trenton, New Jersey. Eiger served as the head of the PEL program thus he retained much of the teaching materials used in those courses from most of the professors who participated. Hence, many of the folders are from the other teachers who participated in these seminars. The "Program Schedules and Teaching Evaluations, 1989-1990" file in this subseries can be used as a key to determine which professors taught which courses and the corresponding material associated with that course. Included within this subseries are course syllabi, memos, newspaper clippings, notes, publications, and reports. These materials focus primarily on the nature of workers and work within the automobile industry but are not limited entirely to that subject.
