Scope and Contents

Summary: The "Published Writings" subseries (1940-2000) is further divided into seven sub-subseries, which are arranged alphabetically according to titles of works, with miscellaneous writings at the end. The series contains manuscript drafts (handwritten and typescript) and other non-research related materials concerning McCormick's writings, such as correspondence and publishing proofs.

The files relating to Academic Reorganization in New Brunswick include the 1978 report, Academic Reorganization in New Brunswick, 1962-1981: The Federated College Plan, as well as supporting documents, such as reports, clippings, and memoranda. One particular item of interest is a typed transcript of a 1965 memorandum from President Mason W. Gross containing his thoughts on an "ideal" model of academic organization.

"Experiment in Independence" consists of various draft versions (handwritten and typescript) of McCormick's doctoral dissertation, Experiment in Independence: New Jersey in the Critical Period, 1781-1789. The Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot files include the two studies written by McCormick during his tenure at the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot, 1942-1944. The first study, A History of Storage and Distribution at the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot, 1917-1943 (Parts I and II), is divided amongst the first four folders. The second study, The Physical Plant, 1917-1942, is in the last folder.

Folders relating to Rutgers, A Bicentennial History include notes and correspondence along with proofs and manuscript drafts (handwritten and typescript) of the book. The notes and correspondence concern publication of the work by the Rutgers University Press, as well as the Bicentennial Committee and the Advisory Committee on Building Names. Note that much of the material in these folders was originally noted with a "P 10" (McCormick's filing system).

The next files contain the handwritten and typescript manuscript draft of the book, The Presidential Game. The material pertaining to The Second American Party System includes McCormick's "Tentative Drafts" I, II, II, and IV (as he originally titled them), as well as his first and second typescript manuscript drafts. Also included are manuscript galley proofs, the indexing set, and index proof of the manuscript. One folder of interest entitled "Shalhope Comment," (Box 44, Folder 7) contains correspondence about, and copies of articles and readers' comments on, Robert E. Shalhope's negative review of The Second American Party System. It also contains correspondence between Shalhope and McCormick, in which Shalhope responds to McCormick's rejoinder to his criticism. The remaining files include drafts and manuscripts of various McCormick articles and writings, including an unbound manuscript of his Masters Thesis, "The War Aims of President Wilson and Congress" (1940). Also included is a copy of his Suffrage and the Constitution (1947), which was written by McCormick under the general coordination of the Governor's Committee on Preparatory Research for the New Jersey Constitutional Convention.

The "Unpublished Writings" subseries (1997-2003) includes three drafts of McCormick's unpublished work entitled "Golf for Women," and the container list details the material contained in each draft according to McCormick's original folder descriptions. Also included is an unpublished manuscript on the history of Rutgers move into "bigtime" intercollegiate athletics, specifically Division 1-A football.

"Publications and Royalty Statements" (1966-2000) include files originally named by McCormick containing correspondence between McCormick and his publishers, royalty statements, contracts and copyright agreements. Also included is a sample cover of The Case of the Nazi Professor, and a significant amount of correspondence between McCormick and Rutgers University Press.

"McCormick's Reviews of Other Historians" (1947-1993) contains tear sheets and photocopies of McCormick's published reviews.
