Saks, Harold L., RC '50, GSE '63, "Service in Hawaii."

Scope and Contents

An 82-page scrapbook chronicling Saks service in the US Army from his induction in June 1945 to his discharge in July 1946. The book, dedicated to his friend, Don Frasier, an MIA, includes original orders, postcards, letters, military passes and cards, publications, clippings, photographs, maps, programs, holiday cards and other pieces of ephemera. Saks provides some annotation throughout the work.

The first ten pages of the book are a random assortment of materials from the span of his tour; of particular note is the October 19, 1945, order conferring the Good Conduct Medal upon him. The remainder of the scrapbook consists largely of photographs and follows his Army career chronologically:

Army Specialized Training Reserve Program, St. Bonaventure, New York: photographs of Saks, his unit in training, his friends, the campus and environs; his ASTRP Certificate of Completion, dated November 11, 1944.

Detachment C, 2239 Trainer Company, 77th Battalion, 13th Replacement, Helemano, Hawaii, Summer 1945: images of life in a military camp, training, camp facilities, his friends.

Motor Pool, 13th Replacement Depot, Fall and Winter, 1945-1946: pictures of his friends, base facilities, the unit mascot (a dog), leaves spent on the beach and in the mountains.

76th Battalion, Company 623, Winter and Spring 1945-1946: photographs of Saks and his buddies.

Company H, Second Battalion, 102nd Infantry Regiment, Spring and Summer 1946: panoramic image of the cadre, trips to the beach at Waimea, the Hawaiian Rodeo, an Army swim meet, an all-star baseball tour, featuring Whitey Kurowski, Red Barrett and Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals, the Mormon Temple.

Mail Clerk, Company 623, 77th Battalion: Saks before leaving Hawaii and the SS Chanute Victory, the ship that carried him home.
