Scope and Contents

Tha National Association of Women Artists holds an annual exhibition of artwork created by their current members. This annual exhibition goes back to the founding of the organization, though this collection has material dating from 1923, with the bulk of the material dating from 1943 to the 2010s.

Please note that the numbering of the annual exhibitions seen in this finding aid is based on the catalogs and other documentation for each annual exhibition. For example, NAWA designated the annual exhibition in 1960 as the 70th Anniversary Exhibition, though the exhibition in 1959 had been labeled as the 67th. This numbering was further adjusted to reflect the anniversary of the founding of NAWA so that, by the late 1980s, the centennial celebration would be reflected as being 1989, 100 years after the founding of NAWA in 1889. This numbering reflects the annual exhibitions as they were called contemporaneously.

Please note that material associated with several annual exhibitions are arranged in the Special Designation subseries. This includes the 75th Annual exhibition from 1965, the 87th Annual during the US Bicentennial year of 1976, the 100th Annual from 1989, and the 120th Annual from 2009, and the 125th from 2014. Please see the arrangement note for the Special Designation subseries for more information.
