Scope and Contents
This series includes material and information on various shows and exhibitions held, sponsored, or curated by the National Association of Women Artists. This series includes material on exhibitions from the 1920s through the 2020s.
Over the years, NAWA has held shows of various types, which are reflected in the arrangement of this series. As NAWA grew over the decades, they developped new avenues for putting on exhibitions. The Annual Exhibitions date back to the founding of NAWA, and by the 1950s, they were showing two regional shows a year (including the Annual Exhibition), and traveling shows or watercolor and graphics. In the 1950s, they brought on a Director of Foreign Exhibitions in order to develop further international exchange shows.
Please note that this is not an exhaustive list and not every NAWA exhibition is represented here; this is primarily so for the early exhibtions held from the first few decades of NAWA's existence. The bulk of the exhibitions covered in this subseries below are from the 1960s through the 2000s, however there is notable material from the 1940s and 1950s documenting the Annual Exhibitions and the Foreign Exhitions, respectively. Please also note that material on NAWA shows and exhibitions may also be found in other series. For example, while the bulk of material about the Annual Exhibitions are represented in this collection, the catalogs published for the Annuals are located in the Publications Series of this collection. Please see also the Administrative Records series for related information that might be found in meeting minutes, reports, NAWA presidents' files, and admin office files, among others.
Please see the Arrangement note for this series and the Scope and Content notes for each subseries for more information on the material found in this series.

Arrangement
This series is arranged into six subseries. This arrangement is based on the original order of the material and is as follows:
- General Information
- Traveling
- Foreign
- Annual
- Special Designation
- Single Venue
These subseries are in general mutually exclusive, with each exhibition being represented in one subseries, based on the original organization of the material. For example, Annual Exhibitions that also commemorate anniversaries of the organization (such as the 75th, 100th, and 120th anniversaries), have been grouped in the Special Designation subseries. This is also true for traveling, foreign, and single venue shows that are deemed to be considered special designation. Please see the arrangement note and the scope and contents note for the Special Designation subseries for more information on what is considered special designation.
