Scope and Contents

NAWA held a number of Traveling Exhibitions that showed around the United States. The material found in this series include information on NAWA Traveling Shows from the mid-20th Century through the 21st Century. From at least the 1960s through the 1990s, the traveling shows centered around the medium used by the artists. For example, there were traveling painting shows, traveling water media shows, and traveling printmaking shows, among others. From around 2000, however, the traveling shows pivoted to center around a subject or a contextual theme, such as masks or suburbia.

Material found in this series include planning documents, correspondence, schedules of the exhibitions, artist CVs, and photographs of some of the exhibitions. The material in this series primarily correspond to specific exhibitions, though there are also documents compiled by various NAWA Travel Chairs and information on potential venues for traveling shows in general.
