Dates
- 1837–1878
Scope and Contents
William J. Thompson was born in Freehold, Monmouth County, a son of Joseph C. Thompson (1743–1808) and Sarah P. Covenhoven (1744–1826). He became a prosperous farmer in West Freehold. William Thompson married Margaret Denise (1775–1856) in 1799. Sidney Denise Thompson was one of their seven children. A separate group of family papers that focus on William and Sidney Thompson is held by Rutgers Special Collections & University Archives. Based on the other manuscripts with which the collection was acquired, it was likely also owned at one time by Edna Netter. In addition, the Monmouth County Historical Association owns a small collection of Thompson Family Papers, plus records of the West Freehold School that accompanied the Thompson papers. These materials came from the same source as the Netter Collection.
