Scope and Contents
Nathaniel Scudder Rue was born in Manalapan, Monmouth County, a son of Nathaniel Scudder Rue (1781–1852) and Elizabeth Toan (1789–1846). He married Ann Potts Cox (1814–1863) in 1837. At first Rue served as a tavern and hotel keeper in Freehold. He later became a prominent farmer, politician, and businessman in the Cream Ridge section of Upper Freehold Township.
