Scope and Contents

Summary: These are papers relating to the settlement of Joseph Thompson's estate, of which William was executor. The majority of these papers are financial documents such as accounts, bills, inventories, receipts, and vendue papers.

The accounts are made up of four folders. There is one folder of the executors account, which lists the money paid out and received by the estate. It gives names, dates, amounts and what for. There is also one folder of miscellaneous accounts. These are made up of other individuals accounts with the estate of Joseph Thompson. There is one folder of vendue accounts. These consist of accounts of bills from the vendue sale. They are arranged by person. They list purchaser and amount.

In addition there is a final account book. This lists dispersements given. It also has a list of the demands on the estate. There is a judgement from the court stating that the funds are insufficient and declaring the estate insolvent and telling how the money should be dispersed among the creditors.

There is one folder of bills relating to William's expenses in the settlement of the estate. Many of these are for lodging while in Princeton, Trenton, and Philadelphia on estate business. Many of them are to A.H. Voorheves. There is also one folder containing the inventory and appraisal of the property, as well as one folder containing the vendue book which records the sale of the property. It lists the buyers their purchases and the price.

The receipts are arranged into two numbered sets. Set one goes from 1-95, 97 with gaps and set two goes from 1-57 with gaps. They comprise eight folders. Since the estate was declared insolvent there are many attachments and notes included.

In addition, there is also legal papers, letters received, and miscellany each comprising one folder. The legal papers include official notices declaring that the funds of the estate were insufficient to pay the debts, court papers relating to a suit between Lucretia Thompson and William Thompson vs. the estate of John Joline, and two copies of Joseph's business dealing while alive. The majority of the letters are from John Lowery. The miscellaneous folder mostly consists of various calculations.
