Thompson Family Papers

Dates

  • Majority of material found within 1823-1892

Scope and Content Note

The majority of the material relates directly to the Thompson family. The members of the family represented are William Thompson, and Joseph Thompson, who were brothers and William's two sons Denise Thompson, and Sidney Thompson. Most of the papers belong to William and Sidney Thompson. Joseph is represented only through his estate papers. There is one folder of legal documents and one folder of financial documents for Denise Thompson and two folders relating to his estate. In addition, there is one folder of several miscellaneous items of other family members.

The papers consist mostly of financial papers which include the following; accounts and account books, bank book, horse book, promissory notes, and a wallet; and estate papers which includes accounts, bills, inventories, legal documents, letters, receipts, and vendue papers. In addition to these type of records there are also legal documents. These are made up of insurance policies, bonds, contract, deeds, indentures, lease, mortgages and a summons. There is also some correspondence.

There is some material that is outside of the family's personal papers. There are the estate papers of Robert Roy, for whom William Thompson was the executor. There are also records for the West Freehold School for 1867 - 1880, of which Sidney served as the district Clerk. Some of the records are for school district number seven others for school district number eleven, however, the records pertain to the same school. The number change is a result of redistricting. These records consist of annual reports, appropriations, bills, letters, receipts, and subscription list.

Sidney was also a justice of the peace and there are two folders of records relating to his time as justice of the peace. They are made up on one folder of court papers and one of miscellaneous items.

The papers are arranged at the series level with the exception of financial, legal documents and school records which are arranged at the subseries level. The estate papers are arranged by the executors or administrators name not by the individuals estate. For example, the estate papers for Joseph Thompson are arranged with the papers of William Thompson. If receipts were numbered the numeric sequence was maintained if they were not or the numbering was unclear they were arranged chronologically.
