Three Fragments of Athena’s Robe,, (1978)

Dates

  • (1978)

Scope and Contents

Lubell 8/11: 291a-b

Three black and white prints of different woodcuts on a single sheet. Each depicts a different legend or context in Greek mythology. One features a deer, a lion and a hare, one a winged goddess holding an owl, with a lion, a swan, a bird and fish, and the third is of a figure holding a sea horse. In print 291a, writing in red ink frames the images: “Winifred Lubell, Wellfleet, Mass. 1978” on the left, “Three Fragments of Athena’s robe 437 B.C.” across the bottom, “as discovered by Lubell at Xavør-“ on the right side, and “Heλλas A.D. 2003” on the top. Print 291b is signed Winifred Milius Lubell. However, the combination of the three in one, along with the writing, makes this a unique piece unto itself. The library also holds prints of the individual engravings. See Lubell 113 and 285 (Coptic Fragment: deer, lion and hare), Lubell 151 ([Potnia Theron]: winged goddess holding an owl), and Lubell 152 (Thetis/[Nereid]: goddess holding reins of sea horse). The woodblock for Thetis/[Nereid], titled Nereid Riding a Hippocamp Thracian is Lubell 463 (Box 30). That for Coptic Fragment: deer, lion and hare) is Lubell 420 (Box 20).

291a-b – 32.9 x 34.2 cm (the frame created by the writing measures 18.5 x 23.3 cm)

291b – 28.8 x 30.3 cm
