Scope and Contents

Lubell 7/11: 275

Fun and Games is a large woodblock image of Punch and Judy facing each other. The excessive facial detail and caricatures give the moment a threatening, disturbing feel (the characters' eyes bulge, their brows furrow, and Punch's clawed hands are barely obfuscated by their position), as does the hanged puppet in the background of the room. The lack of color beyond the small and few areas not inked in makes the piece very ominous. The piece is designated an artist’s proof (A/P) and is signed Winifred Lubell. This is a black and white variation of Lubell 274 and is described separately because of the difference in visible detail between the two pieces. See woodblock titled [Fun and Games] (Lubell 439, Box 24).
