Scope and Contents

Lubell 6/12: 95a-h

Three color woodcut print of a river and its adjacent bed. Black is used for the bottom half, which encompasses all of the land and water (and makes them difficult to distinguish from one another). The sky and horizon each have a different color: grey for the former and yellowish-green for the latter. There are, however, eight different proof versions of this exact piece, and while they share almost all of the above descriptors, some are wildly different. One has a smaller border, but the yellow horizon is gone. Others simply have a worse print, with the ink having degraded much more quickly. But two are extremely odd; they appear to have been either experimental, minimalist interpretations of Lubell's own work, or preliminary plans for the layout of the image. The first (95f) is the only one credited as "proof," is dated 1985 and the second (95e) is dated 1981. Both of these are sparse, but with small details (namely grass on the land) that makes it oddly clearer than the other pieces. One (95f) also only uses two colors, while the other (95e) has its third in a different place than the others. All are signed wither W.M. Lubell or Winifred Lubell. 95a-e are dated 1991, 95f is dated 1985. All prints, with the exception of 95e are printed on rice paper. Woodblocks, both titled Cobb Farm (Lubell 418 and Lubell 419, Box 20) may be the upper and lower halves of this print. Another woodblock, with an image very close to the lower side of the print is titled Truro Hills (Lubell 502, Box 40). See the engraving Lubell 355, which is a similar composition.

Sizes range from 20.9-33.5 cm in height to 40.5-49.7 cm in width.
