Scope and Contents

Lubell 6/9: 85

Colored white line woodcut print depicting one of the many female figurines found in Çatalhӧyük (also spelled similarly to the title), an Anatolian proto-city from 7,500 – 5,700 BCE whose surviving sculpture of female deities significantly outnumbered their male counterparts. Work is largely non-figural, with the exception of the statue itself, worshippers are possibly represented by what appear to be floating hands, while the walls of the temple are covered in multiple distinct patterns. Colors lean far from shading, with multiple pinks, greens, and yellows most used. Signed Winifred Lubell. See also Lubell 154, and woodblock titled Catal Huyuk (Lubell 414, Box 19).
