Scope and Contents

Lubell 6/8: 81

Black and colored woodcut print with hand colored highlights on tan paper. A statue of a goddess covered in floral ephemera. She has blooming flowers on branches for earrings, and a clam shell necklace. The most distinctive element, however, is the wheat stalks bound on her lap. This piece presumably is of an older goddess to whom her devotees give natural offerings. In contrast to some of the artist's other goddess drawings, this lacks some of the more distinctive elements of these kinds of statuary, particularly the indistinct body parts often used to visualize fertility deities. Signed Winifred Lubell. See Lubell 287a-c for a black and white version of this print, and woodblock titled Harvest - Vinca (Lubell 446, Box 26).
