Riverside Avenue – Croton on Hudson,, (1953)

Dates

  • (1953)

Scope and Contents

Lubell 6/1: 62a-i

Nine woodblock prints on machine-made rice paper – 7 were not mounted, 2 were originally matted – of a small town on the edge of a bay, with hills rising across the water. Silhouettes of people and dogs struggle to move through the windy street, while telephone poles and trees bend in the wind. Every piece uses a similar color scheme: dark grey for most of the colored parts, black roofs, objects, and bodies, light grey for the horizon, and red for a swing set and mailbox. The originally matted prints were made on different colored paper: 62a is titled Riverside Avenue and is signed W. Lubell and dated, while 62b is titled Riverside Avenue – Croton on Hudson and is signed W. Lubell, but not dated. The unmounted prints are very similar in terms of paper and print quality, and there is little variation in coloring or shading. 62c is titled Naomi and has a penciled “M” in the upper left corner. 62d has a [3?] in the upper right corner. 62c-f are unsigned, while 62g-i are titled Riverside Avenue and signed W. Milius ’53. 62h is torn next to the signature. See also Lubell 346, a painted version of the same scene. Possible woodblock in box 6.
