Lace Wall, Martha’s Vineyard,, (August 7, unknown year in the 1950s)

Dates

Scope and Contents

Lubell 2/4: 22

Ink drawing (with watercolor and gouache) of a stone wall, made to appear much larger through forced perspective. The sea can be seen through the holes and spaces in the wall, as can be a group of telephone poles retreating into the distance. Small plant life in the front of the wall are details (as are the stones through crosshatching), while the grass behind it is much more uniform. Wash colors are used for the grass, the sea and sky, and some color patterns on the stones themselves. Small patches of white watercolor or paint give a sense of light to the sky. Drawn on a tan page torn from an artist’s sketchbook. See Lubell 32 (Untitled gouache watercolor of large stone wall with receding telephone poles).
