Scope and Contents

Report of recent visit to Connecticut and the proceedings when the steamboat cause came up before the Legislature. Appearance there of A. N. Hoffman with the books of the North River Company on basis of which statements were presented. Questioned by Mr. Colden. Have had an authentic copy of Hoffman's statements made and lodged with Lynch. Hoffman swore he refused to give up the books at request of E.P.L. and that R.L.L. told him that he (R.L.L.) managed to get stock placed in different states so as to mar his project of running on the North River. Hoffman stated under Oath that E.P.L. was inimical to all the members of the Company. I shall have to return to give evidence before the Senate but feel certain Nyack boats will be excluded from Connecticut. Hoffman proves to be the owner of the United States still, having sold her on condition of being paid should a law be passed in Connecticut.
