Dates

Scope and Contents

Favor of 7th inst. received by Capt. Wiswall to whom I shall refer for particulars respecting our progress in the boats. Remark relative to suit at Washington noted. Mr. Colden informed of wishes to have suit put off. Mr. Wirt reported (by Colden) to be better and back in court. Colden importuned by David B. Ogden to agree on a day for the trial. Mr. Emmet sent Colden word that he could not attend at Washington this season; case will probably not come up now. No evil consequences will result, judging present aspect of things at Albany, but it is necessary to be on the alert, remain united end not be imposed upon. Present plot laid out with considerable art by union of all the malcontent, originated however by your greatest enemies with Stevens receiving credit for it although probably he merely proposed it to the Company. Discussion of the plot to trap members of Econ.. to admit to the right of touching the grant on pretext of quieting Gibbons, by alluding to Jersey Question alone and as not touching the Connecticut waters. A perfect understanding exists among them all -Gibbons -Bartholomew -Hoffman -John R.-Stevens -and the whole hose of enemies, each with a part to play. Gibbons with you, Stevens from his connection with the family to bring the Messrs Livingston about, Bartholomew to work in Connecticut & Albany, and Hoffman & Allaire here. The Fulton Co. had perfect knowledge of all their movements, they have always protected the grant, their vigilance has been of infinite service, their interests and yours are identified so that an attack on one is aimed at the other. Mr. Horton goes to Albany to assist in rebutting the attack. Subject of contract for securing butter mentioned & Capt. Bunker's trip to Albany.
