Collagraph in greens and multi-colors. The figure on the right is a black-caped figure with a horned bull’s head, wearing green, along with the title Minotaur. Images of two Venetian buildings in gray and tan are on the left. Handwritten notes identify the left-hand building as the Palazzo Contarine delle Figure and the right-hand building as [Ca’] Rezzonico. On the buildings is printed a quotation from the poem Beppo by Lord Byron: “Some weeks before Shrove Tuesday comes about/The people take their fill of recreation. And buy repentance, ere they grow devout/However high their rank or low their station/With fiddling, feasting, dancing, drinking, masquing/And other things which may be had for the asking.” Cream-colored paper. Signed John Ross. The original two ply mat is not acidic and has been retained for support of the print, which has a central fold. This print is oversized and housed in a Map Case Drawer, Folder 18. See also the two Minotaur prints (Ross 161a-b, Box 5, Folder 6), which superimpose the minotaur figure on the building images, rather than separating them. See [Minotaur], collage plate (Ross 191, Box 7).
