From notebook labeled “Portfolio of Samples of Work done by Fran Manola in her Free-Lance Calligraphy Career c.1966-84,” pages 20-21. In this folder, drafts of quote: “Trees are for carving initials,” signed F. Manola, Scribe, 1972, illuminated calligraphy. Library has three copies, two of which have notes on coloring and spacing. Varying sizes. Also includes photograph of monk illuminating letters on a piece of vellum. Note on verso: “This was done for the Schaefer Pen Co. They posed their model holding the reed I cut & supposedly writing the text written by me on my piece of vellum. I tried to get the vellum piece back, but was told the President of the company’s wife wanted it!!!! Ah me!” 9 3/8 x 7 3/8 inches.
