General Calligraphy

Scope and Contents

Summary: Series includes samples, photographs and drafts of commercial calligraphy, such as certificates and awards, brochures, invitations and the like, as well as a number of practice sheets for refining letters or illuminations, calligraphy quotations and drafts of some of the pieces in the Calligraphic Art and Illumination series. Many have customer information or design notes as to color or word placement. A number of these are for repeat commercial customers, including the YWCA, PEN American Center, Fourdrinier Kraft Board Institute, as well as work for New Providence United Methodist Church, which she most likely donated. Notable commercial pieces include drafts for a large illuminated timeline for Winston Churchill’s life and another to commemorate a wedding. Manola originally kept many of these samples in presentation notebooks, though the material was not in any defined order. The folder descriptions include information on the original notebook and the placement of the material within that notebook. Frances Manola also contributed a page to Edition One: Letter to a Friend and owned a copy of that book. Included here is a photocopy and drafts for that page. The original is cataloged in the library collection. Also included are samples of work by other calligraphers. Smaller items are in manuscript box folders (Boxes 5-6), and larger examples are stored flat in an oversized box (Box 2). The listing is arranged by box, and alphabetically within each box.
