Biographical / Historical
Harold Murray (1893-1977) was born in Newark, New Jersey, were he attended Barringer High School. His pre-medical training was received at Seton Hall College were he earned a B.A. and M.A., and in 1952, Seton Hall University awarded Dr. Murray a Doctor of Laws "honoris causa." In 1920 Dr. Murray received his M.D. from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Murray served an internship at Newark City Hospital, followed by thirteen years postgraduate work in pediatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
During his long career, Dr. Murray received numerous honors and held a number of positions of leadership within the profession. These included Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Trustee of the Academy of Medicine of New Jersey, President of the Essex County Medical Society, Diplomat ofthe American Board of Pediatrics, and Director of Pediatrics at St. Michael's Hospital, St. James Hospital and Newark City Hospital. In 1957, Dr. Bela Schick declared Dr. Murray as "Newark's Prince of Pediatrics."
In an editorial eulogy, Dr. Richard Nevin said, " 'Dynamic' was the word for Harold Murray, in everything from his widely varying interests to his zest for living and for people. Keen of mind, enthusiastic in his energies, he embodied and exemplified those attitudes indispensable for accomplishment."

Scope and content
The papers of Harold Murray, M.D. consist of four sets of lecture notes and photographs. The lecture notes, arranged in chronological order, were taken by Dr. Murray when he was a medical student at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. The photographs, of Newark City Hospital House and Nursing Staffs, are arranged in alphabetical order.
